CELEBRATE JESUS’ BIRTH?
By: Paul Sain, Pulaski, TN
The world considers one a Scrooge, old-fogy, old-fashioned, and “out-of-step with the times” if one dares speak against Christmas as a celebration of Christ’s birth. Nevertheless, here goes!Satan advocates ANYTHING that will disrupt, divert, or pervert what God has declared. The devil does not want us to “do the will of the Father” (Matt. 7:21). If our enemy, the devil, can get us to do what is not authorized, he wins the battle for our soul. If he can get us to follow “new ideas,” “do things in a different way,” “do like others around us are doing” - then he wins! Because, in so doing we are not focused on what God has told us to do!Stop and think - almost every perversion that has been introduced into Christiandom has contained some truth, sounded “right” to some small or large degree. Even in the temptation of the Lord, the devil utilized Scripture in his feeble attempts. It may sound good, feel right to celebrate Jesus’ birth, have special services, send special greeting cards about celebrating the Lord’s birth, sing songs about the Lord’s birth, and talk about it in our conversation one to another. But the fact still remains - there is no AUTHORITY for such religious practice.Preachers and teachers in years past were not mere Scrooges as they spoke against such involvement, as many of their religious neighbors engaged in such practices. They had studied, examined the truth, respected the truth of God, wanted to do ONLY what God had authorized - and knew there was not AUTHORITY for the celebration of the Saviour’s birth. They knew there was no AUTHORITY for the celebration of Easter, Lent, Passover or other religious holidays as noted and celebrated by people today.Times change - for certain! But God’s Word does not change. People change - absolutely! But the Truth remains the same! Everyone changes in some ways (transportation, communication, medication, etc.) - but we must hold fast to the faithful Word (2 Tim. 1:13) and understand we will be judged by the Words of Christ (John 12:48) and whether we have followed faithfully that which is spoken (authorized) by the Lord and His apostles.Satan does not want us to “speak where the Bible speaks and remain silent where the Bible is silent.” Satan does not want us to have a “thus saith the Lord” for all we do religiously - but it is still RIGHT to do so!
